The contemporary landscape of art and design has no one quite like the Haas Brothers. Fraternal twins Simon and Nikolai Haas are artists and crafters, designers and entrepreneurs, a brand and an industry in their own right. They began at the top, with patronage from Hollywood actors such as Tobey Maguire, and pop stars such as Lady Gaga, who perhaps saw in their luridly spectacular characterizations something like kindred spirits.
Since then they have gone from strength to strength, working in collaboration with South African beadwork artisans (organized under the rubric Monkeybiz) and staging a notorious “Sex Room” for Design Miami/, a Jeff Koons-ish slap in the face of whatever residual propriety might have been left in the international art fair scene.
Cuddly provocateurs, at once slapstick and deadly serious, they are a red-hot contradiction. Think you know what they’re up to? You’ll likely be proved wrong before long.
