Contemporary design and haute couture have a lot in common. Both are propelled by the forces of storytelling, signature style, and excellent craftsmanship. Yet crossovers between the two spheres are relatively rare; Rogan Gregory is of the few who have made the jump. He established himself first as a fashion designer, in 2001. A few years later, his clothing collection, Edun, attracted significant attention, making him something of a star in the industry. Then, unexpectedly, Rogan swerved into a totally new direction, creating organic furniture, lighting, and other objects in stone, wood, gypsum, and bronze.

His forms gravitate toward the essential, with a strong sense of organicism—they can be compared, historically, to the work of French designer Alexandre Noll and the Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Often, he takes a specific animal form—an otter, a penguin, a gorilla—as a jumping-off point. At other times he seems to offer a private symbolism, touching on ancient ideals of fertility and vitality.
