Although Robert Engle was not in the initial selection of artists featured in Objects: USA 2020, his pot honoring Paul Smith was a natural addition to the exhibition. Engle began experiments with transferring photographic images onto clay surfaces in the 1960s, and created this piece in the same year that the first iteration of Objects: USA opened its doors to the public. Objects: USA 2020 is dedicated to Paul Smith, who co-curated the original show and championed craft and design throughout his career.
